West Orange is a wealthier community with an economic sector roughly bordered by the Hudson River to the north and the Hackensack River, the Jersey Shore and New York City. East Orange, by contrast, borders roughly on Newark, New Jersey's second-largest city with about 1.5 million residents.

Officially, East Orange is divided into five districts, but unofficially it is also divided into a number of neighborhoods. The M & E later became the first commuter rail line between Newark and New York City and is now the bustling Morristown Line of NJ Transit.

The area became known as New Jersey after Carteret, the royal governor of the island of Jersey, and became the first governor of New York City, the second governor in the United States after George Washington.

Orange was originally an agricultural part of the city of Newark and remained so until the secession of the territory that included the oranges to form the Orange community. This would eventually pave the way for the birth of West Orange, but it was no longer part of that original settlement in Newark. In 1864, Fairmount Township with its 102 inhabitants was taken over and combined with a plot of orange to form the new township East Orange (today East Newark). It was to be the first and only township in New Jersey with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

It was to be converted into the East Orange School District, which has now reached its current status as the largest school district in New Jersey. It has created an environment that promotes learning, cultural awareness and civic attitudes among West Orange High School students and schools in its school system, and creates educational opportunities in the community.

On April 10, 1863, the city of West Orange was established by an act of New Jersey State Legislature and Orange incorporated as a city. It was created by the acquisition of a piece of land that was once part of the Newark Settlement.

East Orange was originally incorporated as a township in a part of the city of Orange, but was reincorporated into a city based on the results of a referendum held two days earlier, on April 10, 1864.

On that day, the Fairmount Community was established by an act of New Jersey State Legislature, and Orange was established as a separate community.

He was named coach of the year in New Jersey in 2014, inducted into the NAACP and into the National Football League's Hall of Fame in 2015, and into the American Association of University Professors in 2016.
